TRESSLER, David Loy, clergyman, born in Loysville, Perry County, Pennsylvania, 5 February, 1839 ; died in Carthage, Illinois, 20 February, 1880. He was graduated at Pennsylvania college, Gettysburg, in 1860, with the highest honors of his class. In the autumn of the same year he became principal of Loysville academy. In 1862 he raised a company of volunteers, and served as captain for nine months in the civil war, participating in the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, and Fredericksburg, where he received two severe wounds, he was admitted to the bar in 1864, and was engaged in the practice of his profession until 1870, when he removed to Mendota, Illinois, and shortly afterward entered the ministry of the Lutheran church, accepting a call to Lena, Illinois. In 1872 he became professor of ancient languages in Carthage college, Illinois, and its treasurer. In the following year he was elected president of the college, which post he occupied until his death. Under him the college was thoroughly organized, and prospered. In 1876 he received the degree of Ph.D. from Wittenberg college, Springfield, Ohio. He published two baccalaureate sermons and occasional articles in the periodicals of his church.
