The French Revolution tore down the medieval structures of Europe, opened the paths of 19th-century liberalism, and usered in the concept of nationalism.
The first stage had been a freethinking middle-class reform
movement based on a constitutional monarchy. The second stage was government
organized around principles of democracy. Third stage is when Louis XVI was
placed on trial for betraying the country. The National Convention found him
guilty of treason, and a slim majority voted for the death penalty and he was
beheaded.
