Louis Powell Harvey

HARVEY, Louis Powell, governor of Wisconsin, born in East Haddam, Connecticut, 22 July, 1820; died in Savannah, Tennessee, 19 April, 1862. In 1828 he removed with his parents to Ohio, where he was educated in the Western Reserve college. He went to Kenosha, Wisconsin, in 1840, taught there, and edited a Whig newspaper, but removed to Shopiere, Rock County, in 1850, and engaged in manufacturing. He was a member of the first State constitutional convention, and served in the state senate from 1855 till 1857. Soon afterward he was elected secretary of state, and in 1861 became governor. He was drowned while on his way to Pittsburg Landing, with supplies for the relief of wounded soldiers, after the battle of Shiloh.
