Edvard Munch
1863-1944
Norwegian Symbolist/Expressionist Artist
Munch painted his most famous work, The Scream, in 1893. It is one of the key works of the Expressionist movement in modern art.
Munch wrote in his diary, "One evening I was walking along a path, the city on one side of me and the fjord below. I felt tired and ill. I stopped and looked out across the fjord - the sun was setting, and the clouds were turning blood-red. I felt a scream passing through nature - it seemed to me that I could hear the scream. I painted this picture, painted the clouds as real blood. The colors screamed."
