The name Art Deco was coined in the 1960's by art critic and historian
Bevis Hiller. The actual name is a derivative from the Exposition
Internationale des Arts Decoratifs Industriels et Modernes, that was held in
Paris, France in 1925. The Art Deco period is attributed to the time
period between the 1920's and 1930's referring to a mix of styles. Not
just limited to architecture this style is attributed to all of the fine and
applied arts from this period of peace between WWI
and WWII. The Art Deco style influenced
clothing, furniture, graphic design, jewelry, and sculpture of the period
and its meaning is continually evolving even today.
