letter dated December 2, 1949 on United States Department of Justice, Federal
Bureau of Investigation letterhead. Signed "J. E. Hoover" in
blue ink. Two lateral folds, light overall toning, especially to left
edge.
John Edgar Hoover (1895-1972) became Director
of the Bureau of Investigation 1924. He ushered in modern technological
investigative techniques, improved training, and successfully lobbied Congress
for larger budgets. In the 1940's and 1950's he became well known for his
anti-Communist activities but his reputation declined in later years due to his
misuse of his office.
