John Pope

1822-1892

In 1861 he was made brigadier-general of volunteers and surprised the confederates at Milford and captured large stores. The army of the Mississippi was his next commanded and with Admiral Foote he took New Madrid in 1862. No a major-general he captured Island No. 10. With Halleck and participated in the advance on Corinth. , He was made brigadier-general in the regular army in 1862, and placed in command of the army of Virginia.
