He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1849 and helped construct the basic fortifications needed at Hampton Roads, Virginia. Gillmore was chief engineer to the Port Royal Expedition, 1861/62 where he helped to capture Fort Pulaski, Georgia, in April, 1862.
